2000 Events


Supervisory Testing Program
On November 21, 2000, 48 HR Professionals attended this IPMA NJ Chapter Program at Amici Milanos Restaurant in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The Keynote speaker was Mr. John Kraus, Manager of Test Development at the New Jersey Department of Personnel. Mr. Kraus spoke at the NJ DOP's new Online Supervisory Test Battery used to test and rank Civil Service employees eligible for supervisory positions. The NJ Chapter was fortunate to host Mr. Neil Reichenberg, Executive Director of IPMA. Mr. Reichenberg boarded a train that morning to join us from the International Headquarters of IPMA in Alexandria, VA.

Holiday Gala
On December 19, 2000, 16 HR Professionals and a few guests enjoyed a relaxing evening at Amici Milanos Restaurant in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The evening provided an opportunity for folks to gather, enjoy a sumptuous dinner, talk a little shop and relax amidst the hectic Holiday Season. The NJ Chapter of IPMA wishes to be known as more than a Professional Organization, but also strives to have social activities which serve to bring the New Jersey HR Community closer together. It is hoped this Holiday Gala is the first of many in the coming years.

2001 Events

PERS Pensions & Benefits Update
On February 20, 2001, 40 HR Professionals attended this IPMA NJ Chapter Program at the Baldassari Regency in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The Keynote speaker was Mr. William Kale, of the NJ Division of Pensions & Benefits. Mr. Kale spoke of the latest changes and proposed legislation affecting Public Employee Pensions and Benefits. Judging from the attendance and amount of questions facing Mr. Kale, one could tell there was a lot of interest on the subjects covered. Chapter Training & Development Conference
On April 11, 2001, 52 HR Professionals attended IPMA NJ Chapter's first Training & Development Conference at the Center for Training & Development, Mercer County Community College. The Keynote speaker was Ms. Alexandra Duran, Founder of "Career Transitions" in Manhattan. Ms. Duran's comments were followed by several breakout session opportunities focusing on the Conference Theme "HR - Change Agents". Our lunch speakers focused on employment law and were followed by a wine, cheese & dessert reception.

Philadelphia Chapter Meeting
On May 14, 2001, Chapter President, Carl Muehleisen and Chapter Program Chair, Jeffrey Richter attended the first Chapter Meeting of the newly established Philadelphia Chapter of IPMA. The meeting was held in the Mayor's Reception Room in City Hall. The topic was entitled "Succession Planning". The NJ Chapter congratulates our colleagues in Philadelphia and wishes them great success in their endeavors to become an influence in Public Sector HR in Philadelphia.

Chapter Elections and Awards
On May 15, 2001, 25 HR Professionals attended IPMA NJ Chapter's Annual Officer Election and Awards Luncheon at the Baldassari Regency in Trenton. The Keynote speaker, Ms. Pamela Katten, Deputy Attorney General, addressed those in attendance on the latest information regarding Employment Law. Ms. Ivy Cohen, Special Events Coordinator for the American Heart Association, spoke to the Chapter in regard to AHA and the 2001 Mercer County American Heart Walk (9/15/2001). Awards were presented for Co-New Chapter Members of the Year (Linda Dobron and Pat DiMattia) and Chapter Member of the Year (Mark Van Bruggen). Members also, unanimously, elected the nominated slate of Chapter Officers for 2002... And they are:

Eastern Region Conference - Albany, NY
On June 18, 2001, Public Sector HR professionals from all over the Eastern Region converged on Albany for 2 1/2 days of training and development. Representatives from the NJ Chapter included Carl Muehleisen, Linda Krajain, Jeff Richter, Mark Van Bruggen, Donna Hope, Craig Stevens and Linda Groark. Among the many highlights, Craig Stevens received the Eastern Region's "Human Resource Supervisor/Manager of the Year" Award and the NJ Chapter received the Eastern Region's "Most Improved Chapter" Award. The NJ Chapter is actively pursuing a bid to host the Eastern Region Conference in 2003. Those who wish participate on the Conference Planning Committee should contact Linda Krajain.

2002 Chapter Planning Meeting
On July 10, 2001, members of the NJ Chapter met at the NJ State Department of Agriculture to establish chapter goals; identify various chapter Committee Chairs and establish the Calendar of Events for the 2002 Program Year. Plans to host the 2003 Eastern Region Conference were also discussed.

HEART WALK 2001
On September 15, 2001, members of the NJ Chapter participated in the American Heart Association's HEART WALK at Mercer County Park (View Flyer). Chapter participants included Linda Krajain, Angelika Muehleisen, Carl Muehleisen, Linda Groark, Donna Hope and Craig Stevens. Over $400 was raised for this worthwhile cause.

Mediating Workplace Disputes
On September 20, 2001, 25 HR Professionals attended this IPMA NJ Chapter Program at the Baldassari Regency in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The Keynote speaker was Mr. Eric Max, of the NJ Office of Dispute Settlement. Mr. Max spoke of the latest techniques of dispute settlement including Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Mr. Max encouraged HR Professionals to seek training in ADR through the Office of Dispute Settlement.

IPMA Training & Development Conference - Nashville, TN
On October 14, 2001, Public Sector HR professionals from all over the world converged on Nashville for 3 1/2 days of training and development (View Announcement). Representatives from the NJ Chapter included Carl Muehleisen, Linda Krajain, Jeff Richter, Tom Healy and Donna Hope. The NJ Chapter is actively pursuing a bid to host the Eastern Region Conference in 2003. Those who wish participate on the Conference Planning Committee should contact Linda Krajain.

Critical INS Issues for Critical Times
On November 27, 2001, 51 HR Professionals attended this IPMA NJ Chapter Program at the Baldassari Regency in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The Keynote speaker was Ms. Linda Dodd Major, Director of the Office of Business Liaison, US Office of Immigration and Naturalization Services. Ms. Dodd Major spoke of the latest issues regarding aliens in the workforce and immigration rules for organizations.

The evening provided an opportunity for folks to gather, enjoy dinner, talk a little shop and relax amidst the hectic Holiday Season. The NJ Chapter of IPMA wishes to be known as more than a Professional Organization, but also strives to have social activities which serve to bring the New Jersey HR Community closer together. This was the NJ Chapter's 2nd Annual Holiday Gala.

2002 Events

Family Medical Leave Act
On February 28, 2002, 56 HR Professionals attended this IPMA NJ Chapter Program at the Baldassari Regency in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The Keynote speaker was Mr. Bruce A. Waltuck, a Compliance Specialist at the US Department of Labor. Mr. Waltuck spoke of the numerous aspects of the Federal Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

NJ Civil Service with Commissioner Ida L. Castro
On April 30, 2002, 83 HR Professionals attended this IPMA NJ Chapter Program at the Baldassari Regency in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The Keynote speaker was Hon. Ida L. Castro, Commissioner, NJ Dept. of Personnel. Ms. Castro spoke of the many aspects of Civil Service from the perspective of the McGreevey Administration. Ms. Castro also invited the members of the NJ Chapter to partner with her office in the re-invention of the NJ Department of Personnel. The Chapter presented Ms. Castro with an Honorary Chapter Membership and the Commissioner entertained questions from what was the largest NJ Chapter gathering to date. View Announcement.

Eastern Region Conference - Newport, RI
On May 5, 2002, Public Sector HR professionals from all over the Eastern Region converged on Albany for 2 1/2 days of training and development. Representatives from the NJ Chapter included Carl Muehleisen, Angelika Muehleisen, Linda Krajain, Jeff Richter, Mark Van Bruggen, Kathy Waugh, Rose Ward, Mindi Shalita, Heather Brooks, Warren Barclay, Newell Benedict, Ralph Brownlee, Mary Habres, Jim Ringwood, and Linda Groark. Among the many highlights, Carl Muehleisen was recognized as a nominee for the Eastern Region's "Charles H. Cushman" Award and the NJ Chapter was recognized as a nominee for the Eastern Region's "Outstanding Chapter" Award. Mark Van Bruggen was elected as a "Member At Large" to the Eastern Region Executive Board. The NJ Chapter sponsored the Host Reception in anticipation of the 2003 ER Conference in Atlantic City. Those who wish to participate on a 2003 Conference Committee should contact Mark Van Bruggen (Host Chair).

Mind Aerobics - Enhancing Your Mind & Memory
On May 15, 2002, 31 HR Professionals attended IPMA-HR NJ Chapter's Annual Officer Election and Awards Luncheon at the Baldassari Regency in Trenton. The Keynote speaker, Mr. Phil (I'm not a Doctor) Bruschi, addressed those in attendance on ways to train your mind to increase memory capacity. Awards were presented for Chapter Member of the Year (Linda Groark) and New Chapter Member of the Year (Valerie Stutesman). Members also elected the Chapter Officers for 2003... And they are:

Trenton "First Friday" Social Event
On June 7, 2002, 12 HR Professionals and guests took time to relax and socialize over a delicious meal at Maxine's Restaurant on Warren Street in Trenton. The NJ Chapter scheduled this social event in support of the City of Trenton's First Friday initiative where downtown businesses are staying open late on the first Friday of every month to encourage State workers and residents to spend more time "after hours" downtown.

OPRA, The New Jersey Open Public Records Act
On September 24, 2002, Over 50 HR Professionals attended this IPMA-HR NJ Chapter Program at the Baldassari Regency in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. The Keynote speaker was Ms. Kay Walcott-Henderson, a Public Records Custodian at the NJ Department of Personnel. Ms. Walcott-Henderson spoke of the numerous aspects of the New Jersey Open Public Records Act (OPRA) including recent changes resulting from the Governor's latest Executive Order.

Re-Inventing the NJ Department of Personnel
On November 14, 2002, Over 60 HR Professionals attended this IPMA-HR NJ Chapter Program at the Baldassari Regency in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. Several facilitators encouraged and recorded recommendations to the Commissioner of the NJ Dept. of Personnel (Ida L. Castro) resulting from her April invitation to the NJ Chapter to "partner" in her efforts to re-invent the agency. Members of the NJ Chapter are compiling the results of these recommendations and will be forwarding them to the Chapter Membership in early 2003.
